Local Transportation in Stralsund

The local transportation in Stralsund is made by the company SWS Nahverkehr. The company also offers special trips, sightseeing tours and school transport if the customers need it. SWS Nahverkehr GmbH is part of a larger group of companies, named Stadtwerke Stralsund. The transport is done on seven lines, that lead up to the districts of North West Pomerania and Rügen. The company owns 34 buses, 23 of which are equipped with modern low-floor technology. Particularly the vehicles have a 75 km driving route through the city.

The construction of the tramway railroad began on 15 June 1899. Back then Stralsund was the seat of the governor from the Prussian province of Pomerania. The first electric tram drove through the streets of the city on 25 March 1900 and the city had approximately 31,000 inhabitants. The tram route network grew fast. In 1903 there were 3 lines available, but on 14 July the lines 1 and 2 were united. During the time the transport network in Stralsund had two major difficulties. One starting with 20 November 1922, because of the inflation the service was shut down. It was restarted only in August 1924. New buses were added in July 1928. The second difficulty was in 1944 when the tramway depot and many tramways were destroyed by the bombing. Because of the numerous damages the tramway service was shut down again. The tramway started operating again on 23 December 1947. The bus service was also relaunched in September 1951. Slowly, until in 1966 all tram lines were substituted by buses. The last tram in Stralsund rode On 7 April 1966.

In 1969 the articulated buses of the type Ikarus 180 have been introduced. Next the Ikarus buses of types 260, 280 and LIAS 677 were added to the fleet. The expansion happened very quickly and now in 2009 the fleet contains 34 vehicles. Most of them are EvoBus Mercedes Benz O 530 Citaro (facelift).

Since 1997, all buses of public transport were equipped with ticket machines. The night-time operation on the less congested routes is possible with the help of call collective taxis. In 1998 there was a company turnaround and the number of lines and the number of vehicles was reduced.

It is good to know that the call collective taxis drive from their stations at the scheduled time. An announcement on the phone number 39 01 01 is essential for the journey with a call-collection taxi. When registering, you need to publish the following informations: your name, address, the name of the station from which you want to leave, your goal (stop), the desired departure time, the number of people who want to register with, whether they have a season ticket and if there will be any luggage transported and their number and approximate size.
